Overlooking the peaceful Lake Kerkini, this village is perfect for endless forest walks, boat trips, and birdwatching.
Nestled on the slopes of Mount Belles, the village of Ano Poroia overlooks Lake Kerkini and the rich Serres plains. A dense forest begins behind the village, with plane trees that block the sunlight and towering beech trees higher up. Streams and creeks flow down from the mountains through nearly every part of the village. There are few people in this fairytale-like area, which is ideal for autumn walks. While the village has guest amenities, what it truly offers is peace and a slower pace of life. The central square is a refreshing oasis, shaded by trees and surrounded by a small, gurgling brook.
You’ll also appreciate the spectacular views to the south from almost anywhere in the village – Lake Kerkini extends amidst golden and green meadows dotted with the red-tiled roofs of the lakefront villages.
Of course, the best way to appreciate this place is to wander through the forest and admire the stunning autumn colors. Along the way, you’ll see birches, maples, plane trees, beeches, oaks, and black pines. Most trails are clearly marked and begin at the top of the village, near the local trout tavern. Bird migration occurs in September and October, and the lakeside woodland and Strymonas River estuary are ideal birdwatching locations. You can also enjoy a boat ride on Lake Kerkini, from the small harbor near the village of the same name.
Ano Poroia is 591 km from Athens (6½ hours) and 97 km from Thessaloniki (1 hour and 20 minutes).

Where to eat
Set in a fairytale-like forest setting at the top of the village, Pestries Taverna (Tel. (+30) 23270.515.00) has its own small fish farm. In addition to grilled or smoked trout, it offers a variety of meats sourced from local producers. Also nestled among the plane trees a bit further down, Bougazi Taverna (Tel. (+30) 698.133.6114) is famous for its buffalo meat soutzoukakia (spicy meatballs) and pork belly steaks. For traditional meze, head to the Pinorakides Ouzeri (Tel. (+30) 23270.230.11) in Kato Poroia.
